MSIT in Privacy Engineering
https://privacy.cs.cmu.edu/index.html
MSIT in Privacy Engineering
The world's first and foremost masters degree program dedicated entirely to Privacy Engineering.
Privacy is not dead. But, our current state of privacy is far from ideal. Data breaches are revealing a shocking amount of data is being collected on all of us. Privacy policies are flimsy, obscure, or unreadable. IoT devices are gathering information about us without anyone noticing. These trends are impacting the bottom line: users are losing trust in the services they use daily and regulators are doling out billions of dollars in fines.
At Carnegie Mellon we’ve spent decades at the forefront of privacy research and our Privacy Engineering masters program is the first and only program dedicated to training software engineers to develop products and services which respect user privacy. Classroom instruction, student research projects, internships, and capstone projects done in partnership with industry give our students the skill set needed to identify and resolve privacy challenges in modern software systems. The skills are in high demand and our graduates earn handsome salaries at the biggest technology companies in the world.

What are the minimum TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, and GPA scores for your program?
English language competency is strongly correlated to academic and professional success. Thus the degree program has a minimum English competency score requirement. A successful applicant will normally have a total TOEFL iBT score of at least 100 (with no sub-score less than 22) or an IELTS score of at least 7.5. The degree program does not have a minimum GRE or GPA requirement. However, admitted students generally have GRE scores above the 90th percentile on the quantitative exam and above the 50th percentile on the verbal exam.
We are looking for strong evidence that you can do well in our degree program. For example, a description of your research project experience, your involvement in the project, and the impact of the research is good evidence. A description of a large software project, your involvement in the project, and the impact of the project is good evidence. A historical essay that starts with your first use of computers at age five is not good evidence. Please write the essay yourself. Get help of course, but it should be substantially your own words.
Are research publications required for my application?
No, publications are not required, but they are perhaps the best evidence that you can do high quality research. Not all admitted students will have them.
Is work experience required for my application?
No, work experience is not required. However, we value some types of work experience highly, particularly if the experience is close to the type of work our graduates perform. We also value summer internships and undergraduate research experiences.

We encourage you to apply without having a strong programming background. We welcome students from many disciplines outside of computer science (e.g., design, psychology, business, education etc.) and these disciplines do not necessarily include programming courses. However, students are expected to demonstrate a proficiency in programming that is normally met through an introductory course in C, C++, Python, or Java. Your programming proficiency will be evaluated during the prerequisite review process and you may be required to take an additional programming course before you can continue in the program.
Do I have to submit GRE scores?
The GRE General Test is strongly encouraged. If GRE General Test scores are not submitted as part of your application, we strongly encourage you to submit a portfolio and other relevant materials (such as coursework) to demonstrate your abilities and readiness for the program’s rigor.
How high do my GRE scores need to be?
There is no minimum GRE required, as each group of students varies year to year. With ETS’s inclusion of the Analytical Writing Test, the practice of simply adding the GRE scores as a means of assessment may no longer be viable.
What is the minimum TOEFL requirement?
For the iBT, a minimum score of 25 in each the subsections is strongly preferred although on occasion we will accept students with a speaking score of 23 or 24. If your speaking score is below 25, we may contact you for an interview via Skype. For the Computer Based Test (CBT), a minimum score of 250 is required. For the Paper Based Test (PBT), a minimum score of 600 is required.
