Syllabus
Course Title: Social Demography: Seeing the World Through a Demographic LensInstructor: Parfait Eloundou-Enyegue
Professor of Development Sociology Cornell University Demography, the study of human populations, is primarily about changes in the size and composition of human population. However, demographic changes have enormous implications for most other sectors of society including business, politics, health, inequality, families, economics and the environment. In this course, we will introduce students to basic demographic processes (fertility, mortality, migration, aging) and their basic indicators. We will then take selected examples to discuss how demographic change affects national development. While
“ demography is not destiny,” we will show how the development trajectories of many regions of the world today depend on their demographic trends. Illustrations will include aging in Europe, family size in Asia, migration in the US, youth bulges in Africa. Students will also learn the rudiments of accessing and analyzing basic demographic data.
