This course will provide an engaging and wide-ranging study of poetic styles, offering expert guidance on the close analysis of poetry. Students will learn about vital poetic techniques—the uses of rhythm, rhyme, line-endings, metaphor, allusion and adaptation, for example—and they will also develop knowledge of important genres and forms, including nonsense verse, lyric, elegy, dramatic monologue, and ekphrastic poetry. The first half of the course will take a comparative approach, looking at a range of work from the nineteenth century to the present as a way of introducing students to the riches of poetry. The second half of the course will focus on four poets (from both England and America) in more detail. By the end of the course students will have an enriched knowledge of modern poetics in its many diverse forms; they will receive detailed feedback on their spoken and written responses, and they will be able to read and write about poetry with increased assurance.
